Cocktail Hour is a unique break traditionally nestled between the cerimony and dinner. It is also a much-needed break between the many things you must do on your wedding day. Things go by very quickly; from the ceremony to Photos, to Dinner, to Dancing – Cocktail Hour is a perfect break in the middle of everything that will give you time to mingle and relax a bit.
We compiled a list of Do’s and Don’ts that we think will guide you in planning the perfect Cocktail Hour. Remember, everybody is different so take what you think is helpful and discard the rest. This isn’t a rule book, just some thoughtful ideas.
Cocktail Hour Don’ts
- Long lines. You want your guests to spend their time mingling and talking about how amazing the cerimony was, not waiting 26 minutes for a beverage. 1 Bartender typically per 40-50 people.
- Too many appetizers. Don’t overwhelm your guests by stuffing them to the brim before dinner. The Cocktail Hour is a special time of beverages, conversation, and light snacks. Keep the number of appetizers short and simple.
- Letting Cocktail Hour go too long. 60-90 minutes max is perfect. You don’t want your guests to be on cocktail 3 or 4, getting bored, and still haven’t eaten dinner yet.
Cocktail Hour Do’s
- Appropriate Music. The music should be suitable for all ages. This will work in your favor especially if you have older guests attending
- Live music adds a classy touch. Having a Pianist or Acoustic Guitar Player playing light music in the background can provide an elegant and memorable experience for your guests.
- Seating. If your Cocktail Hour happens to be in a room other than the main reception hall, make sure there is ample seating for your older guests.
- Appetizers. If you decide to have appetizer stations, placing them near the dance floor is always a great idea. This will encourage people to get up and move around instead of anchoring down at their tables all night.
- Enjoy your Cocktail Hour. It’s ok to join your guests during the Cocktail Hour even if you still plan on having a Grand Entrance. Remember, most of them have already seen you during the Ceremony anyways and want a chance to say hello. But, If you would rather wait, that’s ok too.
- On a budget? if you are on a tight budget but serving alcohol during Cocktail Hour, make sure to have a few appetizers. You could still keep it simple like going with some charcuterie boards and a few light snacks.
